Join artists and scientists in their journey into the magical beauty of the North Sea, and experience how most animals communicate with sound. In Voice of the North Sea you experience biodiversity from the perspective of a fish, a lobster, a clamp. Meet chairholder Tinka Murk (WUR Marine Animal Ecology) collaborating with sound artist Remco de Kluizenaar and student Anna Berestova. You’ll hear how beautiful the soundscape is of a biodiverse, healthy reef. Young animals need this biodiverse concert to guide them to their new home, in silence they will get lost. Music, composed by de Kluizenaar with sound recordings from scientists of WUR and other universities, blends with lecture and inspiring storytelling. Then disrupting human North Sea sounds like shipping noise and pole hammering for wind turbines enter the music to turn it into “next door house party ugliness” and worse. Could there be a more benign, symbiogenic North Sea music in the near future? It can, when we start listening to the voice of the North Sea and respect the amazing biodiversity of the natural musicians.

Volg kunstenaars en wetenschappers op reis naar de magische schoonheid van de Noordzee en ontdek hoe de meeste zeedieren met geluid communiceren. In Voice of the North Sea beleef je biodiversiteit door de oren van een vis, een kreeft, een mossel. Ontmoet hoogleraar Tinka Murk (WUR Marine Animal Ecology) in samenwerking met klankkunstenaar Remco de Kluizenaar en student Anna Berestova. Je hoort hoe mooi het geluidenlandschap van een biodivers gezond rif is. Jonge dieren hebben dit veelsoortige concert nodig om hen naar hun nieuwe thuis te leiden, in stilte vinden ze hun weg niet. Muziek gecomponeerd door De Kluizenaar met onderwateropnames van wetenschappers van WUR en andere universiteiten, gaat de wisselwerking aan met lezing en inspirerende verhalen uit het onderzoek. En dan komt Noordzee mensenlawaai van zware scheepvaart, het gedreun van heipalen voor windturbines en seismische knallen de muziek verstoren tot de lelijkheid van “houseparty bij de buren” en erger. Zou een mildere, meer symbiotische muziek van onze technologie in de Noordzee mogelijk zijn? Daarvoor moeten we beginnen met luisteren naar de stem van de Noordzee met respect voor de fascinerende biodiversiteit van de natuurlijke muzikanten.
